Therapeutic Massage is one of the oldest and simplest forms of health care. The Chinese are often credited with creating massage as early as 3000 B.C. The Japanese further developed massage techniques in the 6th Century to allow our life force (chi) to flow more effectively through the body. It is this philosophy that when the chi flows unobstructed through the body, our energy is brought into balance and the blockages that cause disease in the body/mind/spirit are removed. Massage is a holistic therapy designed to reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure, increase blood circulation, relax strained muscle groups as well as relieve stress, tension and blockages all while releasing endorphins (our body's natural painkillers) into the system.

Deep Tissue Massage was created to restore function to injured muscles, tendons and ligaments. As the name I implies, it is the manual treatment of deep anatomical structures. The work is slow, deep and very specific. In deep tissue massage, there is less emphasis on pleasure as the primary goal and more emphasis on altering structure and muscle restrictions. A classic deep tissue move is the slow, running of the elbow up or down the length of the spine to release the superficial erector spinae muscles and the deeper transversospinalis muscles. Knuckles, palms, forearms and fingertips are also used during deep tissue bodywork. Deep, rhythmic breathing on the part of the client is essential during the session to focus on the affected area and also to promote movement that improves the effectiveness of the work.
Many clients prefer deep tissue massage to the lighter ‘feel good’ techniques of Swedish, Esalen and Reiki therapies. Contrary to popular belief, deep tissue massage doesn’t have to hurt to be effective. Depending on the client and the individual situation, some types of very deep specific work are called upon during the treatment, but I always warn the client in advance and I will only work within his comfort range.
In addition to deep tissue work, I am also trained in Pressure Point, Sports Massage and Foot Reflexology and I incorporate all of these modalities into a very invigorating massage "event." Come experience it for yourself!
